The Royal Event: Princess Charlene Wears Ralph Lauren to The Rose Ball 2013

At this very moment the Monegasque Royals are dancing the night away at the Sporting Club in Monte-Carlo as they are attending the Bal de la Rose. This year they're celebrating 150 years of The Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) and the theme which was chosen by Karl Lagerfeld is Belle Pop (a mash up of Belle Epoque and modern Pop), So let's see the sartorial side of the story!

This year Princess Charlene followed the theme and chose a weird white gown with a biker jacket!

And mind you, she has listened to your suggestions about wearing jewellery and wore all the jewels she could find on her way... but just before you get too excited, they're actually beads beaded extensively on the top part of the gown.

The gown is costum made Ralph Lauren Collection based on many of RL creations as you can see in the picture below (taken from the last few seasons), this isn't the first time Charlene wears a Ralph Lauren dress (remember her gown from Princess Grace awards?) however, it's her first time to wear a costum made piece and to the Rose Ball.

Ralph Lauren Collection dresses

Following the theme, Charlene arrived covering her chandelier-like dress with the Leather Davidson Jacket from Ralph Lauren Collection in cream, you can buy the jacket in black from Stylebop for 1995€ as it's now marked down from 3990€. the jacket is described as:
list iconThe ultimate investment piece, this biker-styled leather jacket from Ralph Lauren Collection adds edgy-cool appeal to any look
list iconClassic motorcycle styling, spread collar with snaps, epaulets, long sleeves, zip pockets and cuffs, belted waist, cropped silhouette
list iconWear with high-waisted skinnies and a fitted top or a mini dress and heels
Material: 100%Calf Leather

Charlene Von Monaco had some dramatic makeup and a retro -full of gel- hairstyle, also her earrings are heart-shaped and they're new!

While I appreciate that she always follows the theme, I really can't make up my mind about this look, I mean, I love the idea of the jacket and it reminds me of Sarah Jessica Parkers black biker jacket over the pink Oscar de la Renta beaded dress, and I adore the beads in Charlene's dress, but the beading is kind of overwhelming and that choker-like thing is looking weird in photos (I'm sure it looks FAB in real, though). so it's your call, love it or hate it?

Arriving with Princesse Charlene de Monaco and Prince Albert was the new royal grandma, Princess Caroline of Hanover who was seated next to her friend, designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Princess Caroline wears Chanel Fall 2012 Couture
Caroline wore a Chanel Fall 2012 Couture gown and accessorized it with round earrings and a necklace with a heart-shaped pendant, typical Caro, me thinks.

Also in Presence was Charlotte Casiraghi who was also dressed in Chanel Couture, just like her mum and just like last year, but this year Charlotte brought her beau, Gad ElMaleh with her and this counts as the first official engagement they attend together!

Charlotte's dress comes from the Spring 2013 collection, and yes being friends with uncle Karl has its perks!

While I prefer Charlotte's shoe-choice to that sad pair of boots above, I still find it a really bad choice on such a delicate dress and feminine look with very soft makeup (not to forget the gorgeous jewelery)!

As you can see it seems that Charlotte has cut her hair, I love it like that and I love her for leaving that cape from the runway look at Karl's atelier!

Which is your favorite look from these looks?

P.s: Will add more photos of other royal guests once they're available.

  1. I'm a Charlene fan. But I did not like the beads nor her hair. She never looks good with her hair gel back. But I admire her effort in staying with the theme. She needs to wear colour. That blue Ralph Lauren dress above would have been much better, and the beading less severe.

  2. The man who founded SBM was a certain Francois BLANC, so it was most natural that Charlene was wearing white (blanc in French). The "Rocher" in the title also should be translated "rock" with all the other meanings of the word included. This explains some other things which otherwise might seem peculiar.
I have noticed that Charlene has a good sense of humour and I'm starting to appreciate it more and more.

    1. Great information about Francois Blanc, I've always admired how she seems to think about these stuff very well that we don't even see it, and I have to say that unlike most people I like the jacket-gown combo, but I dislike the neck choker thing as it makes her head look weird!

  3. to the Charlene fan above - How does a leather jacket go with the belle epoque theme?

Thank you royal coutourer for identifying the outfit. I had tried to no avail. The beading must have been specially made for her enormous shoulders.

    1. I think you mis-read the title of the theme, it's "Belle Rocher" which is basically a mash up of a 1900 Belle Eboque ball and a modern rock concert or whatever, so the beads are belle eboque, the jacket is rock and the long white skirt is for that guy called blanc, makes sense, no?

And the whole outfit was made especially for her as its style is different, I just love it when they costum make something!

    2. Strange to have a theme which no one follows except Charlene who always looks ridicoulus. Remember the Rock outfit some years ago with the horrid hairstyle with the "there-is-something-about-Mary-gel".

Caroline has decided on the theme and Lagerfeld has dressed her for the past centuries. I am starting to think this is like when people throw a "pajamaparty" and everyone knows is really a fancy dress party, except the girl that nobody wants around.

  4. Vind dat korte kapsel bij Charlene echt niet mooi..

  6. It's custom not costum!
